That Sound #88 - I Like Canadian Music

A couple weeks ago, the Olympic Flame passed by my house. I didn’t even know it was going to, but all of a sudden, hundreds of people were lining the streets. Until that point, I had actually been rather cynical about the Olympics taking place in the Vancouver area. “As if there aren’t five times too many people here already.” When the flame passed, I started warming up to the idea. (Pun intended? Maybe.)

While my Olympic Fever didn’t register on the mercury until midway through the opening ceremonies, Canadians have been excited for a long time. And now, you can feel the energy in the air. This show is all Canadian music, in honour of the country and its athletes.

That Sound #86 - Best of 2009 - Bat for Lashes, Ramona Falls, M Ward, Viva Voce, more!

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

icon for podpress  Standard Podcast: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download

As I see the written words “Best of 2009,” I have a gut reaction to dismiss the very idea as an oxymoron. Like when someone who would rather not be awake responds with “What’s good about it?” when greeted by “Good morning.”

As writer Marc Kevin Hall recently observed, 2009 can be summed up by one word: loss. This was certainly true for me; I lost my job to the recession, and, worse, a longtime friend to death. The music community also suffered losses: Michael Jackson, Jeff Hanson, Vic Chestnutt to name a few. So far, this trend hasn’t abated in 2010, yet. Economic indicators continue to be sluggish, musicians keep dying, a personal friend of ours is withering in the hospital from cancer, and tens of thousands have been killed by the earthquake in Haiti.

So, that’s kind of a downer.

While bad circumstances can get me down, I also tend to be an optimist. I generally give people the benefit of the doubt, as well as difficult situations. I think things will start to get better. We’re on the cusp of passing health care legislation which, although it isn’t as robust as many of us had hoped for, should be the biggest stride towards improvement we’ve seen in years. I think we’re also going to figure out how to make a better, more stable economy. Science is continuing to make some sweet strides, and the world is basically a good place.

Even during last year, when things were the most difficult, there were still things to be thankful for, to smile about. For the first half of the year, I got to perform my calling in an amazing setting with amazing people, AND get paid for it. I met some artists whose work I truly admire. My wife is the most supportive and understanding woman I could hope for, and our daughter becomes more beautiful, smart and loving every day.

This is some of the music that helped me through the more difficult passages of 2009, and were the most enjoyable music I came across. I hope you enjoy it!

This is probably the last show of new, non-seasonal music I’ll be doing until after the new year. Because of that, I’ve included a lot of forthcoming releases. Still to come this month, we’ll have Christmas music, as well as best of both 2009, and the entire decade.

I am publishing this, then driving to Portland. This is normally a 5-6 hour drive, but being the biggest travel day of the year, it will be double that. Thank God for other people’s podcasts.

*Update 12:00 - Ok, somehow, the drive only took 6 hours. How? I’ve seriously done that drive, like, 10 times, on Thanksgiving Eve, and it’s been Hell on Earth, all the way through Washington. Did they fix Seattle? Or is unemployment so high that enough people had the freedom to do their traveling before today, leaving the roads unclogged for me?

Hope you enjoyed the Halloween episodes! They were a bit more fun to make than the usual weekly episodes, though also a bit more work. I think I doubled my lifetime whispering by doing the “voices”for those.

Our two-year-old, Sydney, helped me do this one.

I encountered a problem while recording this week’s show–there seemed to be voices leaking into the recording. It’s strange, because we don’t live anywhere near radio towers, which is usually the cause of that kind of interference. What’s also disconcerting, is that I’m not sure if I was hearing the voices coming from my headphones, or from somewhere else in the room.

I’m OK with recording equipment, but definitely not an expert. I’m going to look over my setup again, and make sure nothing’s changed since last time I did my show. Anyhow, I hope the interference isn’t too distracting to listen to!

Just saw Where the Wild Things Are today. I think I’ll have to see it again. Not because I loved it that much (though I did enjoy it), but because I think I might enjoy it more a second time. It dawned on me a couple hours later that it’s almost more a dream than a story, and that I should watch it that way.

Did you see it? What did you think?
