New Ramona Falls video: “Russia”

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

As a new radio host eight years ago, when Portland three-piece Menomena came down to my station at the time for an interview, I learned a very important lesson: Just because a band or artist makes songs about heartbreak, regret, angst, that doesn’t mean they are heartbroken, regretful, or angsty to interact with. In fact, they likely won’t be, since they’re able to deal with or purge those feelings through their music. A few minutes into my interview with Danny, Justin and Brent, I put aside my notebook full of carefully crafted, What-Would-Terry-Gross-Ask questions and simply embraced our discussions of lactating males, “so…who likes potatoes,” and the band’s a capella rendition of Eminem’s “Lose Yourself.”*

In the intervening years, the band has also let their videos serve as a counterpoint to the emotion of their music, and this has continued through to Brent Knopf’s project Ramona Falls. Pitchfork just posted “Russia,” a follow-up to the first video from last year’s Intuit (which made my 2009 best-of list). It stars Matt Sheehy (who also joins the band for live shows) opposite a girl who I don’t know, though, she’s nearly the only part of the video I can’t place. (Fellow Portlanders will recognize scenes from First Thursday, Oaks Park, March Fourth Marching Band, Sam Barlow High Schoolthe Springwater Corridor and The Old Church, where Knopf makes a split-second cameo.) It’s directed by Cullen Hoback. Update: The girl is Emily Galash. Thanks Mercury.

Menomena are releasing their fourth album, Mines, July 27 on Barsuk.

Who Put the “Who” in the “iamamiwhoami”?

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

UPDATE: Wednesday, 4/21, 12:00 It would seem that I have misunderestimated the affinity of Swedish synthophiles with stereotypically Scandinavian stereoptics for the Philips Philicordia GM753. It turns out that Andreas Dahlback, a frequent collaborator of Jonna Lee, is also an owner of the keyboard in question. I guess I’m a Philicordia Philistine.

This is a photo of him from his MySpace page:

Me & whatever | Andreas Dahlbäck

You can see an identical blemish on his forehead to the one on the young man in an altered, transcendent state in the “b” video. And, of course, the organ:

Bildspel | Andreas Dahlbäck

Thanks to Hils, for directing me toward Dahlback in the comments section.

Regardless that the “who is” mystery is solved, I love the mythology they’ve created: A mysterious and beautiful creature (conceived by aliens? science? nature? magic) is born out of an ancient tree all covered in Earth-vernix, eventually found, bathed, covered in protective plastic, and later just an Elizabethan collar. When she sings, humans around her go into a trance-like euphoria, and plants become sentient.

And I’m still looking forward to the Junip EP.

This is the latest video, “o,” released a couple weeks back:

I’ll be publishing a new show soon!

———————————————
My original post:

Another member of the enigmatic project discovered?

I am a relative latecomer to the iamamiwhoami party, only having discovered the electronic music/viral video phenomenon earlier this month. If you’re just getting to the party now, I’ll catch you up.

In late 2009, this video appeared on YouTube, posted by an anonymous user by the name of iamamiwhoami.

In the five months since, seven similar videos have been posted, each time revealing slightly more of the mysterious young woman’s features, who is seemingly born of a tree or out of the Earth. The last two, titled simply “b” and “o” (rather than long number sequences separated by periods) are full-length songs, and show enough of the woman’s face, uncovered by tar-like makeup and relatively undistorted otherwise, for some to recognize her as Swedish singer/songwriter Jonna Lee.

The above video demonstrates pretty clearly that Jonna Lee is the singer for iamamiwhoami, but there are three men also shown in the seventh video, “b,” presumably the other musicians comprising the project. I believe I have determined the identity of one of them: Tobias Winterkorn.

Winterkorn is keyboardist for the Swedish band Junip, which is fronted by Jose Gonzales. The band are currently working on a follow-up to their 2005 debut EP, and have released a single on their website called Rope & Summit (email required). On the website’s splash page, we see one of Winterkorn’s vintage keyboards, a Philips Philicordia GM753--the same exact model as shown in “b.”

So, maybe it’s just coincidence. After all, Philips did mass-produce those Philicordias. And Sweden is a country, not a neighborhood, so it doesn’t prove anything, right? But, although there’s not much to go on in terms of facial features, we are shown each of the three men’s eyes.

Here’s one of them from “b”:

And here’s a closeup, taken four years ago by Flickr user ca6:

DSC_0572 by ca6.

Same country? Check. Same keyboard? Check. Same eyes? Check.

Now, who are the other two?

There’s enough great music on the cutting room floor this time around to make a whole nother show. (Yes, I just wrote “whole nother.” People say it all the time, way more than “NEW-kye-ler,” and yet that’s in the dictionary now as an acceptable pronunciation of nuclear. Maybe it should have an apostrophe. “Whole ‘nother?” Yeah, that’s better.)

So, um, hey, remember me? Sorry it’s been so long. I’ve just been busy, traveling, sick, traveling… Life is back to normal now, which means I can finally get back to doing these shows again.

Speaking of these shows, how do you like the 90-minute format? I’ll tell you the reason I’ve been doing them that way: It’s a LOT of work to publish a show, way beyond just the recording itself. I don’t have as much free time as I used to when I made one a week, so it fits in my life a lot better just to make it every other week, and make it a bit longer than it would be otherwise. I realize an hour and a half might be a little long, but I’m guessing you can stop it if you need to, and come back to it later. It also gives you two weeks, instead of one, to absorb all the new music. Is that how it’s working out for you?

Also, some listeners have told me that this show is their primary source for new music. If that’s the case, did you know that I post one awesome thing every day here, and even more here?

K, anyway, here’s what I’m playing this week:

That Sound #88 - I Like Canadian Music

A couple weeks ago, the Olympic Flame passed by my house. I didn’t even know it was going to, but all of a sudden, hundreds of people were lining the streets. Until that point, I had actually been rather cynical about the Olympics taking place in the Vancouver area. “As if there aren’t five times too many people here already.” When the flame passed, I started warming up to the idea. (Pun intended? Maybe.)

While my Olympic Fever didn’t register on the mercury until midway through the opening ceremonies, Canadians have been excited for a long time. And now, you can feel the energy in the air. This show is all Canadian music, in honour of the country and its athletes.

That Sound #86 - Best of 2009 - Bat for Lashes, Ramona Falls, M Ward, Viva Voce, more!

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

icon for podpress  Standard Podcast: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download

As I see the written words “Best of 2009,” I have a gut reaction to dismiss the very idea as an oxymoron. Like when someone who would rather not be awake responds with “What’s good about it?” when greeted by “Good morning.”

As writer Marc Kevin Hall recently observed, 2009 can be summed up by one word: loss. This was certainly true for me; I lost my job to the recession, and, worse, a longtime friend to death. The music community also suffered losses: Michael Jackson, Jeff Hanson, Vic Chestnutt to name a few. So far, this trend hasn’t abated in 2010, yet. Economic indicators continue to be sluggish, musicians keep dying, a personal friend of ours is withering in the hospital from cancer, and tens of thousands have been killed by the earthquake in Haiti.

So, that’s kind of a downer.

While bad circumstances can get me down, I also tend to be an optimist. I generally give people the benefit of the doubt, as well as difficult situations. I think things will start to get better. We’re on the cusp of passing health care legislation which, although it isn’t as robust as many of us had hoped for, should be the biggest stride towards improvement we’ve seen in years. I think we’re also going to figure out how to make a better, more stable economy. Science is continuing to make some sweet strides, and the world is basically a good place.

Even during last year, when things were the most difficult, there were still things to be thankful for, to smile about. For the first half of the year, I got to perform my calling in an amazing setting with amazing people, AND get paid for it. I met some artists whose work I truly admire. My wife is the most supportive and understanding woman I could hope for, and our daughter becomes more beautiful, smart and loving every day.

This is some of the music that helped me through the more difficult passages of 2009, and were the most enjoyable music I came across. I hope you enjoy it!
